Booking onto a session

For many of the sessions it is possible to just turn up and join in however please note that you must book for some of the sessions due to the limited number of spaces available in the class. Occasionally sessions may have to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances or due to lack of interest.

Where possible we will try to contact you to inform you of such a cancellation. If you are planning on attending a session for the first time it is recommended that you contact the Forever Active Coordinator to confirm the details of the class.

How to be prepared for your exercise session

These are guidelines to help you to get the most out of your exercise session and to ensure your comfort and safety during the class.

What to wear?

Please ensure that you wear the following to your exercise class:

  • Wear suitable clothing – this does not necessarily mean wearing a tracksuit, but please ensure that you wear loose, comfortable clothing suitable for exercising in. Jeans and skirts are generally not suitable (except for chair based exercise classes)
  • Wear suitable footwear – trainers are ideal (Especially for the sports sessions and exercise to music classes) If you do not have trainers we recommend well fitting, soft shoes.
  • For ladies we recommend that you wear a sports bra for all sessions or a fully supportive bra for maximum support and comfort.
  • For ladies we recommend that an old bra is worn for the aqua classes under your swimsuit. This ensures support in the water and prevents breast tissue damage during jumpy movements as well as helping to prevent back pain. Please make sure it is an old bra as there is the possibility of discolouration in the water!

What to bring with you?

  • A drink – we recommend water, although a fruit squash or juice may be more beneficial for diabetics
  • A towel – we recommend that you bring a small towel for perspiration.
  • Light snack (applicable for diabetics) – in case of low sugar levels
  • Inhalers (applicable for asthmatics) – in case of an emergency
  • GTN sprays (applicable for participant’s with angina) – in case of an emergency
  • Money – Activity fees

Other points to consider:

  • We recommend that you do not have anything to eat at least an hour before exercise
  • Refuel and rehydrate – replenish your body with a healthy snack or meal and drink plenty of water after your session.
  • Be aware how your body feels. It is very common to experience delayed muscle soreness after exercising, which may last for a couple of days after your activity. Perform some light stretches and keep active to alleviate soreness.

Paperwork for the session:

  • You will be required to complete a carbon copy medical form. This should be given back to your exercise instructor. The exercise Instructor will keep a copy and a copy will be sent to the Forever Active Forum. All information on the form will remain strictly confidential. The Instructor will give this information to a paramedic / medical professional in the event of an emergency.
  • A copy is sent to the Forever Active coordinator, this ensures we have all of your details in the event of a class cancellation.
  • You will be required to sign the register on arrival at your class

Incentives Scheme

The initiative is currently on hold until further funding is received.

Equipment you can purchase

Resistance bands are used in many sessions including chair-based sessions, exercise to music and Pilates classes. You may purchase your own resistance band and guidebook from the Forever Active Forum and practice the exercises you have learnt at home. Please complete the equipment order form below and send it back to Helen Johnston.
